UPDATE: Tackling Racism on Recon

from Recon News

24 June 2020

We wanted to take a minute to update you on where we're at, following on from our statement regarding the Anti-Racist movement.

We want to let you know that we have received your feedback in response to our statement, either via social media or email, and that we are looking into it as a team. Ultimately, we want to enact change that benefits all our members, including our members of colour.

We're considering the most appropriate channels for reaching out to our members of colour to get a clear picture of their experience of Recon and find ways to make our service better. Team Recon is made up of diverse voices, but we can't speak for entire communities, so we'll soon be reaching out to members to get their opinions in a survey. The results of this survey will also help inform our anti-racist charter.

As well as creating a survey, we're currently looking into ways to provide more education on the use of our current reporting tools, making it clearer on how to report racist behaviour. On top of this, we're investigating whether the reporting system needs updating to ensure it's fit for purpose.

We've made donations to both the US and UK Black Lives Matter movements, and our team our taking strides to educate themselves on this cause and the issues that affect people of colour. We encourage you to do the same. If you're uncertain of where to start, one of our team has found a useful link that consolidates information on how to get informed, as well as how to support the movement, and we'll add the link below.

For many years, we've prioritised promoting diversity, but we realise that there's much more for us to do. We'll be sure to keep you updated on any future developments.
